What Equipment Do I Need?

Since the original MicroMentary was developed, the computer world has come a long way. It is much easier to capture and edit video in order to put together a MicroMentary.

Basic Hardware Needs :

  • Compound or dissecting microscope - The better the optics, the better the images you will be able to capture.
  • Video or digital camera with adapter to attach to microscope and connect to computer - Cameras that can attach to the computer via a USB cable or Firewire are the easiest to use, cameras with analog outputs require special hardware to convert the signal for capture by the computer.
  • Computer for capturing and editing images as well as creating presentation - In general, the faster the processor, larger the memory, and the larger and faster the hard drives, the more flexibility you will have when it comes to creating presentations.
  • VCR or CDRW - Optional, but useful for creating "stock footage" and creating copies of finished projects for distribution.

Basic Software Needs:

  • Image capture software - Usually comes bundled with camera.
  • Image editing software - To create support graphics or supplemental images for use in presentations.
  • Movie editing software - To edit captured video images, apply effects, and create final movie for distribution.
  • Web authoring software - Optional, but useful for sharing your creations over the Internet.

Drawing of termite worker by Chris Martin. Several line drawings of termites and organisms living inside of the termites were created and digitized by scanning for use in The Secret Life of Termites.

My favorite system for ease of use, cost effectiveness, and quality:

Teachers and students, don't forget educational discounts!

Image - SwiftCam and microscope. The output from the SwiftCam USB can be run straight into an iBook. The software to capture the images comes with the Swiftcam, and the software to edit a movie, iMovie, is free with the iBook.
