Black Mountain Elementary School Waste Reduction Data

Different grade levels at Black Mountain Elementary School recycled to reduce the amount of solid waste sent to the landfill. The fifth grade came up with a plan to recycle paper and plastic and to collect data on how we are doing.

Beginning in November 2002 grades 4 and 5 began collecting weekly data on the total amount of paper and plastic they recycle. They collected weekly data on how much garbage is left after recycling. Select a link below and see how they did.

Beginning in December 2002 grades K-3 and combo-classes began collecting data each week on the total amount of paper and plastic only. The data was collected by students in the recycling club on a weekly basis.

Beginning in November the support areas (office, teacher preparation room, computer room, and teacher lounge) began recycling paper only. The data was collected by students in the recycling club on a weekly (or more often, if necessary) basis.

Waste Audits for each class and school area were conducted by the recycling club. This data shows how effective each classroom's recycling efforts were and point out areas that can be improved. Check out the waste audit on our principal!

Mrs. Severance's and Mrs Kappel's classes collected data on solid waste in the cafeteria . Below you will find data collected for two days of lunch room waste audits for paper, plastic, styrofoam, food, and other waste. We used this data to make recommendations on dealing with lunch waste at our school.

During Earth Week we encouraged students to bring an "Earth Friendly" (low waste) lunch to see if we could reduce the totals for solid waste. Check out our data for the Earth Day Lunch Waste Audit.
