Black Mountain Elementary School Waste Reduction Data

Black Mountain Elementary School is recycling paper and plastic and reducing the amount of solid waste sent to the local landfill. The fifth grade came up with a plan to recycle paper and plastic and to collect data on how we are doing.

Our first Waste Audit to monitor recycling efficiency was conducted on the front office. Based on our data the front office is one of the largest producers of paper waste at the school. Most areas in the front office where found to be doing well at recycling. The principal's office, however, was an area of concern. Below you will find a pie chart of the percentage of waste found in the principal's trash for a day as measured in several categories. The members of the recycling club are working with the principal on a plan to improve the amount of paper and plastic she recycles.

Based on the data, if this trend continues, the principal will waste 1.3 kilograms or 2.9 pounds of paper a month that could be recycled. After discussing the problem with the principal, the Recycling Club Waste Audit Teach has formulated the following efficiency improvement plan for the principal:

  • A small bin will be placed in the principal's office for paper and plastic
  • The recycling club will check during our Friday recycling to empty the small bins into the bigger bin.
  • The principal will be audited in the future to see how she is doing
