Mountain Elementary School Waste Reduction Data
Black
Mountain Elementary School is recycling paper and plastic and reducing
the amount of solid waste sent to the local landfill. The fifth
grade came up with a plan to recycle paper and plastic and to collect
data on how we are doing.
Many
students and teachers believed that paper and plastic in the classroom
might be just a small part of the solid waste produced on campus.
They pointed out that the lunch room might be a place that could
also benefit from recycling. Mrs. Kappel's and Mrs. Severance's
classes took on the challenge of performing a waste audit on two
days in the lunch room. They are developing ideas on how we might
reduce the amount of waste produced in five categories—paper,
plastic, styrafoam, food, and other. Explore the data collected
by Mrs. Severance's class presented below in pie charts and think
about how you might reduce the solid waste in one or more of the
categories measured.
